Tyler, the Creator and Lacoste Make Tennis Clothes for the Menswear Crowd

Tyler, the Creator has mastered his own brand of style: one that feels both youthful and grown-up at the same time. For him, this balancing act seems effortless: a kelly green suit with a bright yellow sweater, say, or a pink polo with flower-printed pants. Both sound too showy on paper, but on Tyler, each outfit looks ultra-stylish—and yet somehow, and necessarily, uncomplicated. Time and time again, he’s proven that big colors and prep-adjacent style can be quite the perfect pairing. And now, the rapper and designer has brought his trademark eye to his new collaboration with Lacoste, a collection of clothes that make usually ordinary tennis tracksuits and polo shirts feel like covetable menswear.

Earlier this summer, Tyler was spotted at the French Open in some co-branded Golf Le Fleur x Lacoste threads, but he remained tight-lipped on any official details. It turns out the pink-and-white rugby shirt he wore was just the tip of the iceberg. The collaboration is much more than a single shirt—it’s practically a complete line of clothing. There are two-toned tracksuits featuring jagged diagonal prints, classic Lacoste polos in shades of blush pink and baby blue, and fuzzy cardigan sweaters with delightful details. Plus, pants and bucket hats and varsity jackets! (No joke: a full-on collection.) All of the clothes and accessories feel youthful but polished, not unlike a frame from a Wes Anderson film. It’s no small task to make clothing that would somehow look at home at a country club as well as a skate park, but Tyler has managed to do exactly that.

It’s important to remember that a collection this is good is no accident; this is just the latest uptick in Tyler, the Creator’s rise as a serious player in modern menswear. His label Golf Wang makes fun, bright yet grown-up clothes, and it surely caught the attention of Lacoste. The fact that one of the most iconic prep brands in the world enlisted Tyler for a collection of his own speaks volumes of how far the designer has come—and how much further he’s headed.
